Warner Japan builds local niche

Warner Japan's 'Paradise Kiss' is the studio's latest in a string of Japanese hits. TOKYO -- Japan can be a lucrative market for local producers, with 29 domestic pics earning 1 billion ($12.5 million) or more in 2010.But of the Hollywood majors in Japan, Warner is by far the most committed to -- and successful at -- producing and distribbing local pics.In June, Warner Japan released its 10th local production to pass the 1 billion mark, "Paradise Kiss." Based on a hit comic by Ai Yazawa about an exam-stressed high school girl who finds a new life and romance with a crowd of teen fashionistas, the pic is forecast to finish with $18.5 million.Since its first local releases -- the two "Death Note" fantasy comic adaptations that collectively earned $100 million in 2006 -- Warner has evolved from straight-distribution or minority-shareholder deals to active participation in development. "Our policy is to take the lead partnership role in all of the movies we produce," says Warner Japan topper William Ireton.At the same time, Ireton notes, the company is not giving precedence to its local offerings over its Hollywood pics: "We see the two as complementary product offerings that give us a balanced, competitive slate," he says.Also, under the bilingual and bicultural Ireton, who was raised in Japan, Warner has mixed Hollywood methods,such as director first-look deals and test screenings, with local practices, such as the "production committee" system of assembling a team of media companies to produce and promote a pic, while divvying up the rights. (Warner, however, did not recruit a TV network for the "Paradise Kiss" production committee, which Ireton describes as a rarity these days for a hit domestic title.)In June Warner announced the production of "Rurouni Kenshin" a period actioner based on a best-selling comic. Takeru Sato stars as a samurai assassin who vows to give up his bloody career and devote himself to protecting the weak. The pic is skedded for a 2012 release, with Warner distribbing.The pic is indicative of Warner shifting its production strategy following the triple disasters in March -- earthquake, tsunami and nuclear reactor meltdowns -- that devastated northeastern Japan and changed audience psychology."Films in development have been rewritten to eliminate content that evokes the tragedy, while local writers and directors seem for now to have shifted focus to more uplifting human dramas," Ireton says.However, the Warner Japan head says he does not see the competitive landscape changing significantly. "Local product will continue to battle foreign films for market share, with 50% to 60% of annual B.O. being derived from domestic films," he says.It's a market share that Warner, with 10 local pics that have passed the 1 billion-yen mark -- 10 more than all its Hollywood competitors -- is counting on. Robina out at TV Guide Network

TV Guide Network programming chief Diane Robina has resigned her post, a rep for the cable channel confirmed. TVG chairman Allen Shapiro will assume control of programming at the network, which is co-owned by Lionsgate and One Equity Partners. No formal search is under way for a replacement. Robina's next stop is unknown, though sources indicate she hasn't necessarily seen the last of Lionsgate and may be considering a new role on the corporate side of the studio. A Lionsgate rep declined comment. Her departure is understood to be unrelated to the recent cancellation of series "Hollywood 411." Robina, who came in as executive VP of development, acquisitions and programming strategy in January 2010, has been spearheading the struggling channel's efforts to find a series and found modest success recently with the addition of unscripted series "Nail Files." Robina is a veteran of both Comcast Corp. where she led development on the Fearnet channel, and MTV Networks, where TNN and TV Land were among the channels she led. Did Gigi die on One Life To Live?

My brother told me Gigi died! OMG! Did she really die?? And if so,
how? Geeze, why are they killing off so many characters..its making
the show worse!

Does anyone remember seeing this film or know the name?

When I was around 8 I remember watching a film(I believe it was a TV
film and it was not released in cinemas etc) and I was wondering if
anyone thinks they may have seen it also and could tell me the name.
I am certain that it was broadcast around 2000 and I am also certain
the title has the word 'storm' in it, I have been convinced it was
called "The Eye of the Storm" however Google has not recognized a film
by this name. I also remember confusing the title of this film with
that of the film "The Perfect Storm" as both films were showing around
the same time (except "The Perfect Storm" was in cinemas).
The plot revolved around what I think was a small American town that
was hit by a wild storm(possibly snow storm) and everyone in the town
gathered in a town hall or something similar. Whilst the storm occured
over a period of hours the townfolk discovered a sinister stranger
amongst them who went on to tell them that he wanted them to give him
one of their children for some reason. I believe the film ended with
the main character having to sacrifice his own son to save everyone
and then years later he passes the stranger on the street and notices
he is with a teenage boy who looks a lot like his son.
This is all drawn from an 11 year old memory so I could have some
information very wrong. But if anyone could shed some light on this I
would be very grateful as I would like to see the film again. Thanks

This movie is about a guy who gets a message on his phone and the
person that is sending him the message dares him to do something and
if he does it he receives money in his bank account. It is sort of
like a game.There is like a lot of dares. The first dare is the
easiest which is to kill a fly. I remember that another dare is to eat
dog poop. The final dare is to kill his own dad who is played by Bruce
Willis. The guy ends up not doing it and instead unexpectedly his own
dad grabs the knife and kills him instead. So both the son and the dad
were playing the game, but the son didn't know his dad was playing. In
this movie the dad is mean. Throughout the whole movie the guy has
flashbacks of his childhood and how everyone would treat him bad. I
think it was like an asian movie or it took place in China. The people
behind the messages were a group of asian guys. I think the movie
title had a two-digit number in it.
