Paranormal Activity 3 Scares Up Huge $54M Debut
First Released: October 23, 2011 1:48 PM EDT Credit: Vital Pictures Caption A scene from 2011s Paranormal Activity 3LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Paranormal Activity 3 didnt go bump within the evening. It made a lot of noise in the box office having a record-setting, $54 million opening. The 3rd film in Vital Pictures low-budget fright franchise, that was No. 1 in the box office, had the greatest debut ever for any horror movie, based on Sunday studio estimations. It broke the prior record part two set last year with $40.7 million. It is also the greatest opening ever to have an October release, topping the $50.35 million Paramounts Jackass three dimensional made this past year. Paranormal Activity 3 is really a prequel, using the discovery of disturbing home-movie footage from 1988. Strong reviews also assisted, he stated, together with a rave from Time magazine. And essentially, horror movies simply play better inside a packed theater. Ultimately, it will get to why theres still a theatrical business, why people still visit the movies, Harris stated. You want to laugh inside a group, you want to be frightened inside a group, people prefer to cry inside a group at nighttime where nobody can easily see them crying. Its all of the reason cinemas exist which genre happens to be in the forefront. Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com, stated he was expecting Paranormal Activity 3 in the future in around $35 million for that weekend, due to the fact most beginners happen to be underperforming this fall. This brand is really as solid because the Twilight brand or even the Jackass brand. You will find certain brands that simply transcend any type of box-office rhyme or reason. They simply resonate, Dergarabedian stated. They are shot in somebody's house, they appear like theyre shot having a home video recorder, the ones just connect with it. Last days No. 1 release, the advanced boxing robot adventure Real Steel, fell to second place. It made $11.3 million for any domestic total of $67.two million. You Know What's Awesome? This Poster for Shame
My first reaction to the new poster for Steve McQueen’s acclaimed drama Shame was natural, perhaps obvious: “But where’s Michael Fassbender?” The guy only ran away with the Venice Film Festival award for Best Actor and is on a track for serious contention in this year’s Oscar Index and is one of the brightest rising stars in all of cinema and makes women and men alike swoon with his bracing good looks. (To say nothing of similarly absentee co-star Carey Mulligan.) But that reaction seems forever ago, lodged in the hours since I haven’t been able to stop looking at it. The reality is that this speaks to both the serious moviegoer who’s familiar with Shame’s notoriety and doesn’t need faces to sell it to him or her and the casual moviegoer who may or may not have heard a peep about this but knows the implications of a messy bed stamped with the word “SHAME.” Sexy! Vivid! Dramatic! It’s not just for 10-year-olds who failed to pull up the sheets before dashing to school anymore. Anyway, we all remember what happened the last time Fassbender went front and center on for the marketers, so technically the critics got what they wanted. It’s a perfect poster! Well played, Fox Searchlight. [via THR]
Nikita's Lyndsy Fonseca on Alex's Predicament and Giving Fans "Olex"
Lyndsy Fonseca, Nikita In Season 2 of Nikita, Alex is working alongside Division - but that doesn't mean that she and Nikita will remain adversaries. Even if Nikita did break her arm and shoot her in the leg. Bygones! "I think there was a lot of worry this season about 'Oh my God, Alex is turning evil, Alex is on the bad side,' and it's really not that at all," Lyndsy Fonseca tells TVGuide.com. "It's kind of the unfortunate situation they're in right now. There's still a lot of love, there's still a lot of hate. There are moments in the next few episodes where Nikita tries to help Alex, and there's moments where Alex warns Nikita about things." VIDEO: Nikita's Devon Sawa: Owen won't get in the way of "Mikita" Alex also has more urgent matters on her mind besides Nikita (Maggie Q). Finding out more about how her parents died has lit Alex's vengeance-seeking fires, and in Friday's episode (8/7c on The CW), she takes another calculated step toward reclaiming her birthright, her father's company, Zetrov. "She tries to get the spokesman, the public figure of Zetrov, from a lead that Amanda has given her," says Fonseca. "She's kind of playing a part, pretending to be somebody else. It's definitely progress, but unfortunately there's a huge consequence to be paid when she does try and get this guy." For now, Alex is stuck with her current allies because she needs the resources that Division offers, even if that requires working with Amanda and Percy (Melinda Clarke and Xander Berkeley). Fonseca teases that in an upcoming episode, "Amanda does something so horrific to Alex with someone that she really loves and cares about, and that it really changes the relationship between them. Because of that, Alex is going to have to trust Percy a little bit more. We're going to figure out what that might mean." Photos: Nikita, Hawaii Five-0 and more of TV's sexiest crime fighters Having faith in Percy, however, isn't always the most prudent course. Percy, of course, remains trapped in a glass-enclosed prison, not that it's stopped the former Division boss from making requests and dispensing advice on Black Box matters. "You never want to trust Percy. When you do, you know you're at the end of your rope," says Fonseca. "When I play Alex, I know not to trust him. I know that there's consequences to doing things that he asks, but it's hard to be five steps ahead of Percy. I think that he's kind of building his secret way of breaking out." Check out this peek of Friday's episode "Knightfall" and Alex's critical decision: And although Nikita fans may relish the show's action and intrigue, they also love, well, love. Fonseca understands that fans want Alex to find romance with Devon Sawa's recurring character, Owen. "The 'Olex' thing is just shocking and funny to me," she says. "I love that fans are so into the show enough to develop a love interest between two people who have never even met on the show. I don't even know if they'll ever meet. I hope that the writers -- and I have mentioned it to them as well -- give the fans what they want." In the meantime, viewers will just have to make do with Sean (Dillon Casey), the guy sent by Oversight to keep an eye on Division. It's no secret that the show's setting him up as a romantic interest for Alex, but so far, after being betrayed by everyone, she's not feeling generous, much less romantic. "In the beginning of the season, she's just really irritated by this guy, what with a lot of people breathing down her neck and pulling her in a lot of different ways," Fonseca says. "She doesn't need another person telling her what's right and wrong. So I think she's a bit defensive about him and feels like he's just there to question who she is in a way that's not really helping her. There's definitely no liking going on right now." The complete Nikita Season 2 report: "Mikita" on the run and a romance for Birkhoff? Ah, but hearts as well as allegiances can change, and Alex certainly has shown to be susceptible to outside influence and adapting to extreme circumstances. "I think the big shift comes in Episode 8, but it's a slow development," Fonseca says. "They have moments when they are put in life and death situations where they're forced to come together to survive it. I think that you'll get to be surprised by Sean. There's a lot of Boy Scout, 'I'm a perfect guy and I do the right thing,' black-and-white mentality that he has that Alex really doesn't understand or like. Then he starts to show that bit of a grey area in his ideas toward Division." Nikita airs on Fridays at 8/7c on The CW. Will Alex ever fully reconcile with Nikita? Do you think she needs an ally more than a love interest right now? Owen or Sean?

Jessica Lange Cheers to Jessica Lange for her scary good performance on American Horror Story. Want more Cheers & Jeers? Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now! As creepy mom next door Constance on FX's gleefully over-the-top shocker, the two-time Academy Award-winning actress (Tootsie, Blue Sky) seems to be channeling Kim Stanley's acclaimed work as her mother from hell in the 1982 Hollywood biopic Frances. Lange - who won an Emmy in 2009 as a very different kind of spooky matriarch in HBO's Grey Gardens - could take home another statuette for her eerie turn here. She's not the only standout HBO alum among AHS' stellar ensemble. Six Feet Under's Frances Conroy is a scream as an aging chambermaid, and True Blood's Denis O'Hare continues his serial scene-stealing ways as a mysterious burn victim. Truth be told, the entire cast is terrifyingly talented. What did you think of American Horror Story - and Jessica Lange? Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!

The dispute landed in arbitration, where Jones was awarded $15 million, which Paramount then attempted to somewhat off-set by issuing a profit participation statement to investor Marathon Funding that included an unusual $3.75 million deduction. Marathon got 25 percent of net distribution revenue, so Paramount charged its investor by calculating 25 percent of the $15 million loss The odd chain of events then led Marathonto sue Paramount for a breach of fiduciary duty. Los Angeles Superior Court JudgeMark Mooneydecided to hear the case himself at a bench trial with no jury. Paramount says that regardless of the error, the deduction was proper and it doesn't owe Marathon anything. The studio points out that Jones' contract was executed before financiers got on board and that these investment agreements required those putting up money to pay losses. In turn, Marathon believes that Paramount is attempting to off-set responsibility for the "gross and inexcusable blunders" to the studio's former attorneys, and even if the financing contract allowed deductions, Paramount owed larger responsibilities to manage investor money wisely.
